How to succeed in design without really trying.

Okay, I guess that isn't really accurate because I try pretty hard. I've been working the rooms, pressing the flesh and making connections. In the past few weeks I picked up my first job from Dow Chemical, which completes my trifecta of clientele (before moving back to Michigan, I identified three clients that I wanted to land--the Saginaw Spirit, Bay Regional Medical Center and Dow Chemical). I've landed plenty of other clients, but to have gotten all three of my pre-move picks feels pretty good.

The biggest news is that I am moving my studio into a historic building on Bay City's west side.




The building is called the Fisher Building, named after S.O. Fisher who was reportedly the richest man in Michigan in the late 1800s. The building was built in 1893 when it was known as the Lumbermen's Bank. The first floor/garden level, which is where my studio is located, was the bank itself (presumably there were some offices on the top two floors). I have the entire first floor to myself. The space is made up of two rooms.





The front half of the space is big and bright. The floor is a mosaic made entirely of Italian marble, with the initials "SOF" set near the middle of the room (the SOF initials are also etched in glass on the back door). This view is from near the front door, looking toward the back room. You can see the fireplace (not working) in the back room and to the right you see a yellow door. Storage closet? Bathroom?




Good guesses, but no...it's the vault. Which will now be used for storage such valuables as reams of paper and ink cartridges. I will rest easier at night knowing that ny supplies are safe and sound.
